How Soil & Root Management Can Benefit Your Landscape
Proper soil and root management are important for several reasons, including:
- Water Management
The soil should have the right water balance to support the root system. When the soil is too dry, the roots can’t absorb the water they need, and when it is too wet, the roots can’t get the oxygen they need. - Nutrient Management
Good soil contains the right balance of nutrients to support growth. When the soil lacks certain nutrients, the tree can’t grow properly, and when the soil has too much of these nutrients, it can become toxic to the tree. - Structure Management
The soil must support the root system. Compacted soil will not allow roots to penetrate and get the water and nutrients they need. Soil that is too loose can’t anchor the tree properly.
Common Problems Urban Trees Face
Too Much Soil
Urban trees often have excessive soil and mulch around their lower trunk and roots. This problem results from too much backfill placed on trees in the nursery. When planting the trees, landscapers may not remove this excess filler, and they can add residual soil from the planting hole. Excessive soil over a root system reduces the root’s ability to exchange gases with the atmosphere, which can promote fungal growth that decays the lower trunk.
Girdling Roots
Sometimes, roots grow too closely around the base of the trunk, and they begin to girdle and damage the tree over time. When this happens, our team can help prune away the circling and girdling roots. The quicker you call us, the faster we can get started. Swift action helps fix the problem before roots become too large and damage the tree.
Compacted Soil
Construction and heavy machinery can compact the soil around trees. Trees must be able to exchange gases between their root system and the atmosphere. When soils are compacted, oxygen squeezes out of the pore spaces between the soil particles, and roots cannot survive. Heavily compacted soil also makes it difficult for young trees to grow and expand their root system. This problem limits their growth, health, and stability.

How Marlin Landscape Can Help
Our soil and root management services include:
- Radial Trenching
This technique aerates the soil around a tree by removing and replacing soil, which may be amended, in trenches. Radial trenching uses a spoke-like pattern (radially from the trunk) in the root zone to improve root growth conditions. - Vertical Mulching
This soil aeration technique uses pneumatic tools to create vertical holes in the soil. We put these holes throughout the tree’s drip line and fill them with materials that improve aeration. This process reduces soil compaction, improves drainage, and increases organic matter content. - Girdling Root Pruning
Our team can prune roots that are circling and conflicting with the trunk base or structural roots. This service often works best in conjunction with root flare excavation. - Soil Aeration and Cultivation
This process uses pneumatic tools to cultivate or “fluff” the soil throughout a tree’s drip line. Doing so reduces soil compaction and improves aeration and drainage. Cultivation often includes soil amendments, too. - Root Flare Excavation (RFE)
This process removes excess soil around a tree's base to expose its natural root flare. RFE is often necessary to correct poor planting practices.
If your soil needs tending, our team is here to help. Our techniques help promote root growth for vibrant, healthy landscaping. We offer free estimates, so contact us online to set up an appointment.
